Hiking near Nová Bošáca: Veľký Lopeník, Veľká Javorina and the Haluzická Gorge

Hochovec cottage stands right in the White Carpathians above the village of Nová Bošáca, so the best hiking destinations nearby start practically at the gate. The four routes below can be combined depending on how much time and energy you have, from a quick evening climb to a full day out.

Veľký Lopeník

What:: The most popular destination from Hochovec, a ridge hike along the Slovak-Moravian border up to a summit with a 22-metre lookout tower. On a clear day you can see into both countries from the top.
Where:: The route from around Hochovec cottage is about 10.2 km.
How long:: Allow roughly 3 hours and 15 minutes of walking.
What it costs:: Access to the trail and the tower is free; just bring sturdy hiking boots.

Veľká Javorina

What:: The best-known and highest peak of the White Carpathians, a favourite destination with Carpathian meadows, forests and views across the region. Better suited to a full day out than a quick walk.
Where:: About 23.8 km from around Hochovec cottage.
How long:: Allow a full day.
What it costs:: The trail is freely accessible, no charge.

Haluzická Gorge

What:: A short loop through a rocky gorge, one of the most photogenic spots near Nová Bošáca, manageable even with kids.
Where:: A loop of about 2.1 km.
How long:: Usually under an hour, a little longer at a slower pace with children.

Hájnica lookout tower

What:: If you're short on time, the Hájnica lookout tower offers a clear view over the White Carpathians for the price of a short climb, ideal just before sunset.
Where:: About 3.1 km.
How long:: Under an hour there and back.
What it costs:: Free.

All four destinations work well with a return to Hochovec cottage in the evening, by the fireplace, around the garden fire pit, or just unwinding after a demanding day in the mountains. If you only have one day in Nová Bošáca, Veľký Lopeník is the usual pick; staying longer, you can add the Haluzická Gorge or a quick climb up to Hájnica.
